<p>David Autor wuchs in <a href="Newton_(Massachusetts)" title="Newton (Massachusetts)">Newton</a> (Massachusetts) auf, seine Eltern waren <a href="Psychologe" title="Psychologe">Psychologen</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-wsj_3-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-wsj-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Nach der <a href="High_School" title="High School">High School</a> schrieb sich an der <a href="Columbia_University" title="Columbia University">Columbia University</a> ein, brach das Studium aber ab und arbeitete als Verwaltungsassistent und Softwareentwickler an einem Krankenhaus in Boston.<sup id="cite_ref-imf2017_4-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-imf2017-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Später nahm er erneut ein Studium auf, diesmal an der <a href="Tufts_University" title="Tufts University">Tufts University</a> (<a href="Medford_(Massachusetts)" title="Medford (Massachusetts)">Medford</a>, <a href="Massachusetts" title="Massachusetts">Massachusetts</a>) und erhielt 1989 einen <a href="B.A." class="mw-redirect" title="B.A.">B.A.</a> in <a href="Psychologie" title="Psychologie">Psychologie</a> mit Spezialisierung in <a href="Informatik" title="Informatik">Informatik</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-cv_2-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-cv-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Anschließend gab er als Freiwilliger in der Glide Memorial Church in <a href="San_Francisco" title="San Francisco">San Francisco</a> benachteiligten Studenten Computerunterricht.<sup id="cite_ref-wsj_3-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-wsj-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Anschließend ging er an die <a href="Harvard-Universit%C3%A4t" class="mw-redirect" title="Harvard-Universität">Harvard-Universität</a> und bekam 1994 einen <a href="Master_of_Arts" class="mw-redirect" title="Master of Arts">M.A.</a> in <a href="Public_Policy" title="Public Policy">Public Policy</a> von der <a href="John_F._Kennedy_School_of_Government" class="mw-redirect" title="John F. Kennedy School of Government">John F. Kennedy School of Government</a>. Am selben Ort wurde er im Juni 1999 <a href="Promotion_(Doktor)" title="Promotion (Doktor)">promoviert</a>. Seine von <a href="Lawrence_Katz" title="Lawrence Katz">Lawrence Katz</a> betreute Dissertation trägt den Titel <i>Essays on the Changing Labor Market: Computerization, Inequality, and the Development of the Contingent Work Force</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-cv_2-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-cv-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-upjohn_5-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-upjohn-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Im Anschluss wurde er <a href="Assistant_Professor" title="Assistant Professor">Assistant Professor</a> am Department für Wirtschaftswissenschaften des <a href="Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology" title="Massachusetts Institute of Technology">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> und 2003 zum <a href="Associate_Professor" class="mw-redirect" title="Associate Professor">Associate Professor</a> sowie 2008 zum Professor befördert.<sup id="cite_ref-cv_2-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-cv-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Daneben hatte er Gastprofessuren in <a href="University_of_Chicago" title="University of Chicago">Chicago</a> und <a href="Harvard_University" title="Harvard University">Harvard</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-cv_2-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-cv-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p>Seit 2006 war er Fellow des <a href="Forschungsinstitut_zur_Zukunft_der_Arbeit" title="Forschungsinstitut zur Zukunft der Arbeit">Forschungsinstituts zur Zukunft der Arbeit</a> in Bonn.<sup id="cite_ref-cv_2-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-cv-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Seit 2009 ist er Fellow der <a href="Society_of_Labor_Economists" title="Society of Labor Economists">Society of Labor Economists</a>, seit 2012 der <a href="American_Academy_of_Arts_and_Sciences" title="American Academy of Arts and Sciences">American Academy of Arts and Sciences</a> und seit 2015 der <a href="Econometric_Society" title="Econometric Society">Econometric Society</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-cv_2-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-cv-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> 2012 wurde er zum Fellow des <a href="Institut_f%C3%BCr_Arbeitsmarkt-_und_Berufsforschung" title="Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung">Instituts für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung</a> ernannt.<sup id="cite_ref-iab_6-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-iab-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er war im Herausgebergremium des <i><a href="Review_of_Economics_and_Statistics" class="mw-redirect" title="Review of Economics and Statistics">Review of Economics and Statistics</a></i> (2002–2008), des <i><a href="American_Economic_Journal%3A_Applied_Economics" class="mw-redirect" title="American Economic Journal: Applied Economics">American Economic Journal: Applied Economics</a></i> und des <i><a href="Journal_of_Labor_Economics" title="Journal of Labor Economics">Journal of Labor Economics</a></i> (2007–2008) sowie von 2008 bis 2014 Herausgeber des <i><a href="Journal_of_Economic_Perspectives" title="Journal of Economic Perspectives">Journal of Economic Perspectives</a></i>. <p>Der Fokus seiner Forschungstätigkeit liegt auf <a href="Humankapital" title="Humankapital">Humankapital</a>, der <a href="Qualifizierung" title="Qualifizierung">Qualifizierung</a> im <a href="Arbeitsmarkt" title="Arbeitsmarkt">Arbeitsmarkt</a>, der <a href="Einkommensverteilung" title="Einkommensverteilung">Einkommensverteilung</a>, der <a href="Technologische_Arbeitslosigkeit" title="Technologische Arbeitslosigkeit">technologischen Arbeitslosigkeit</a> und der <a href="Globalisierung" title="Globalisierung">Globalisierung</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-iab_6-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-iab-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p>Während seiner Doktorarbeit veröffentlichte er 1998 den einflussreichen Artikel <i>Computing Inequality</i>, den er gemeinsam mit <a href="Alan_Krueger" class="mw-redirect" title="Alan Krueger">Alan Krueger</a> und seinem <a href="Doktorvater" title="Doktorvater">Doktorvater</a> <a href="Lawrence_Katz" title="Lawrence Katz">Lawrence Katz</a> verfasste. Sie untersuchten den Effekt von qualifikationsorientiertem technologischen Wandel („skill-biased technological change“, SBTC) auf die Einkommensverteilung der Vereinigten Staaten. Sie finden Hinweise, dass durch die Nutzung des Computers die besser qualifizierten Arbeitnehmer höhere Zuwächse bei den Löhnen erreichen konnten und eine höhere Nachfrage nach Arbeitskräften mit Hochschulabschluss entstand.

</p><p>Später arbeitete er mit David Dorn und Gordon Hanson zur Bedeutung des Importwettbewerbs der USA mit <a href="China" title="China">China</a>: Sie zeigten, dass er einen volkswirtschaftlichen Vorteil generiert, aber stärker davon betroffene US-Regionen eine geringere Lohnsteigerung als andere haben.

</p><p>In <i>Why are there still so many jobs</i> analysiert er, warum trotz Automatisierung viele Arbeitsplätze bestehen bleiben.

</p><p>Im Jahr 2008 erhielt Autor den <a href="Sherwin-Rosen-Preis" title="Sherwin-Rosen-Preis">Sherwin-Rosen-Preis</a>, 2020 wurde er für seine Forschung bei den <a href="Heinz_Awards" title="Heinz Awards">Heinz Awards</a> ausgezeichnet. Seit 2025 zählt der Medienkonzern <a href="Clarivate_Analytics" title="Clarivate Analytics">Clarivate Analytics</a> ihn aufgrund der Zahl seiner Zitationen zu den Favoriten auf einen <a href="Nobelpreis" title="Nobelpreis">Nobelpreis</a> (siehe <a href="Clarivate_Citation_Laureates" title="Clarivate Citation Laureates">Clarivate Citation Laureates</a>).
